When the announcement was finally made this weekend as to whom would be playing the DC Comics superhero Superman in upcoming movie reboot/"re-imagining" ... British actor Henry Cavill (TV's "The Tudors," the 2007 fantasy "Stardust") ... the response from the assembled, interested geek parties was pretty much unanimous and resounding: "Who?"
To be fair, the 27-year-old actor does follow in the footsteps of his fellow cinematic Supermen in that regard, though. You might recall they included the also-unheard-of-at-the-time Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh.
And besides, the more crucial casting will probably come when the filmmakers choose their romantic interest/foil, Lois Lane. The intrepid newswoman has been played memorably in film by ugly-sexy actress Margot Kidder, and uber-hottie actresses Erica Durance and Teri Hatcher on the small screen (in the series "Smallville" and "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," respectively).
A few other sites are reporting that director Zack Snyder and executive producer Christopher Nolan already have a "wish list" of young actresses they'd like to test for the coveted part. Unfortunately, Nolan already took one, seemingly perfect Lois off the board: Anne Hathaway, who's playing Catwoman in his upcoming Bat-sequel, "The Dark Knight Rises." However, Jessica Biel, Rachel McAdams and "Glee" star Dianna Agron are rumored to be in contention.
We're not sold on perpetually glum "Twilight Saga" star Stewart, but we do have to concede that any list excluding both usual suspects Jessica Alba or Megan Fox is a decent one. However, in the interest of diversity and dissent, we have a few contenders we'd like to throw into the ring as well. Their hats, at least ...
