SWIMWEAR TRENDS FOR 2012

Swimwear trends don’t move in quite the same cycles as other fashion trends. That’s because it’s hard to reinvent the bikini or the monokini: in the need to balance functionality and sex appeal, designers are limited to what they can actually do. Despite this, one piece and bikini trends are certainly still influenced by other fashion trends. For example, bikinis in 2009 and 2010 were heavily inspired by some of the key fashion trends for those years: cutaway clothing, one-shouldered pieces, fetish fashion, high-end sportswear and rock-chic garments. These are largely styles of the past, however.

So what swimsuit trends can we expect for 2011 and into 2012? You’d be right if you guessed swimsuit styles influenced by other key fashion trends for the year. So when it comes to choosing a bikini for 2011 and 2012, these are the styles should you be looking out for.

Vintage-inspired swimwear
There’s a scene in 1956′s High Society where Grace Kelly kneels poolside and pushes a model boat, the True Love, across the still water. She’s wearing a white halterneck swimsuit that ends in a small, ruffled skirt; her chin-length hair is neatly curled, her feet are bare. Never has a swimsuit looked so elegant.

DETACHABLE COLLAR STATEMENT FOR 2012

Grace Kelly glamourised it. Madonna gave it an androgynous twist. Katharine Hepburn camouflaged her neck with its assistance.

What started as an accessory trend in seasons past has now transitioned into one of the statements to make in spring 2012. If the title of this trend guide and the photo aren’t enough to go by, we are, indeed, talking about the transition of the detachable collar into a spring trend where the collar acts as a statement.

statement collars to buy
Traditionally belonging to the masculine wardrobe, over the years the humble collar has served its time for fluctuating between genders. It initiated the masculine trend in the most obvious fashion, but with the subtle seep of chiffon blouses and feminine silhouettes, the birth of androgyny was seen.

During the Great War, it belonged exclusively to a uniform, then the creative charisma of Hollywood allowed the collar to enter a female actor’s green room.

HIGH WAIST SKIRT TRENDS FOR SPRING 2012

The new skirt silhouette: high waists for spring.  Take inspiration from the playful hourglass silhouettes of the fifties with skirts that rise to the waist. Whether pencil-slim, A-line or full, the high-waist skirt is both flattering and feminine - not to mention the perfect compliment to other trends for the spring 2012 season.

high waisted mini skirtThis spring, the easiest way to tap into the retro movement is by introducing a high-waist skirt to your wardrobe. It can be a formal piece with strict lining and mobility or one imitating the playful silhouette of the ‘50s. This trend has taken a plunge into the nostalgic ocean of the 1950s, while staying true and proud to the modern aesthetic of 2012 fashion trends.

LEOPARD PRINT IS A FASHION STATEMENT

HOW TO LOOK GOOD IN LEOPARD PRINT?

Leopard print is one of the fashion classics that's always there. If you like it you can wear it in accessories, dresses, and footwear but since it's quite common now there are some fresh ideas of wearing it.

5 Fresh Ideas For Wearing Leopard Print

Animal prints haven’t gone anywhere in the new season. The snakeskin prevails though but leopard hasn’t gone completely. In fact it has stuck around for a while now and many fashionistas seem to love it. But since leopard is now something quite common we decided to put out some fresh ideas for wearing a leopard print.

THE MUST HAVE SHOES

WHAT SHOES YOU MUST HAVE? WHAT SHOES TO BUY?

From Steve Madden and other high end designers to Payless bargains, those with shoe obsessions can quickly find themselves with too many shoes and not enough closet space. If you’re a shoe lover who is trying to get her habit under control in a very practical way, it’s important to stop for a moment and think about the major essential shoe styles every woman should own. After analyzing the styles, you can then start limiting yourself to a few pairs of shoes, per style, and get your shoe obsession (and your closet space organization) under control quickly.

CROP TOP: HISTORY AND FACTS

Also known as a “belly shirt” or a “cutoff shirt,” a crop top is a top which falls just above or around the navel, exposing the midriff section. Crop tops have gone in and out of fashion since the 1980s, and have also become a symbol of sexuality. Crop tops are often worn to draw attention to some aspect of the midsection, whether it be a navel ring, toned abs, or a pregnant belly, also known as a “baby bump.”

CROP TOP: TIPS FOR WEARING CROP TOPS

With summer coming to an end and fall semester quickly approaching, most of us have just a few weeks left to try one of the hottest summer trend: crop tops! With scorching August temperatures still going strong, now is the perfect time to show a little extra skin.
I know many of you think crop tops are hard to wear, but I’m here to prove you wrong: They can be versatile AND flattering when styled correctly. Read on for my tips for wearing crop tops, as well as some sample outfits to get your inspiration going!
Tips for Wearing Crop Tops

Fashion 2011: Crop Top

While we've been seeing crop tops and bared stomachs on the runway for a good couple of years now, the reality is that it's a trend with little hope of reaching a point of mass consumption any time soon. Why? Simply because we live in a body conscious age where it's only the minority of people daring enough to expose that much skin. That said, spring 2011 will push the trend forwards and further into the mainstream (if not the masses).
As a 2011 fashion trend the crop top is not just about exposing one's whole stomach, but about finding elegant new ways of showing a peep of toned midriff. Yes there's the crop top of the grunge-revival. Yes there's the crop top of the sportswear-as-daywear trend. But there's also the crop top as a sophisticated, refined piece that some will embrace as a look not to be feared. Read on for these examples and more.

Crop tops in 2011

The styles on the spring 2011 runways were many and various; from teeny, tiny tops to the smallest hints of skin. To break it down, here are some of the different ways we've seen cropped tops on the runway:
  • With elegance: the merest slit along the waistline of a dress, turning it into a two-piece ensemble broken up only by a shallow hint of skin. YSL and Chloe were spring 2011 masters of this subtle take.

  • Fighting fit with stomach fully bared: Rag & Bone and Ohne Titel brought us sporty examples that are perfectly sexy for those with the confidence to pull them off. These type of cropped tops end just below the bust, and were paired with hipster pants for a revealing end result. You could just as easily substitute the hip-huggers for a high waisted bottom half, though, if you wanted to add some modesty.

  • Beneath a sheer layer: adding a layer of transparent fabric is the perfect way to combine the ongoing popularity of the sheer trend with the newness of the exposed midriff.

  • With cutaway detailing: expect many dresses to hit the shelves with cutaway details that expose parts of the stomach or midriff.

Fashion: Jumpsuits and Playsuits

It was only a few short years ago that cutesy playsuits and rompers were a summer must-have (albeit a short lived one). Well, as fashion would dictate it, one-piece anythings are back in style. From overalls to jumpsuits, to playsuits and rompers, these one piece cuts are an option for fashionisers looking for pieces for their spring 2011 wardrobe. And for those who are, they can rest assured knowing that any investment pieces, particularly statement playsuits, will be a worthy investment with the one piece styles on the cards as sitting amongst spring 2011 fashion trends.

Jumpsuit & Playsuit styles

Overalls: while we saw denim overalls on the Ralph Lauren S/S 2010 catwalk, this was really an exception. Denim overalls aren't a part of this trend for 2010, and we don't expect to see them for on trend in spring 2011 either.
Evening: a new take on relaxed glamour, no-one has nailed this quite like Alber Elbaz for Lanvin. Single-shouldered and sequin covered jumpsuits were a striking alternative to the traditional evening dress.
Tailored: smart and sophisticated, a tailored playsuit can be office-ready as well as dressed up for day or night. Look for crisper fabrics, cuffed shorts, and cinched in waists - a la Karl Lagerfeld.
Loose and flowing: the perfect take for Spring/Summer, this look has a dash of hippy - working best when combined with soft floral prints. Fabrics should be free-flowing, legs wide and long. The likes of Roberto Cavalli and Etro produced the perfect examples.
Sporty: Julien MacDonald, Lacoste and Walter all took sportier options, in line with S/S '10's sports trend; from hoods and zips to simple cotton jersey fabrics.
Basic: while some designers have gone for prints and intricate detailing, the likes of Stella McCartney and Givenchy presented the ideal basic options. A more versatile wardrobe staple, go for black, white or nude colours and simple straight cuts.
Pictures of these styles and others can be found in the gallery of jumpsuit and playsuit picturesbelow.

Jumpsuit & playsuit lengths

Anything goes when it comes to length. At their shortest, we saw playsuits and rompers that were almost as tiny as hot pants (in a way blurring the lines between playsuits and bodysuits). At their longest they reached the ankles as full jumpsuits, and in between were knee length and mid-calf versions like those seen on the runways of Badgley Mischka and DKNY.

How to wear jumpsuits & playsuits

While you can get a pretty clear idea of some of the style options via the paragraph above, here are some more general tips and ideas of how to wear the trend:
  • If you have curves or a pear-shaped figure, try for a halter jumpsuit or playsuit, belted in firmly at the waist, for a bombshell silhouette.
  • For night time opt for luxurious fabrics like silks; details like sequins or sheer panels; or leather for an edgier look.
  • If you go for a basic block-colour piece, the options are practically endless. Try a cropped jacket in a contrasting colour, a la Givenchy; bold statement jewellery; any variety of belts or ties; or some out there add-ons like removable shoulder epaulettes, badges, chains, or interesting layers.
  • Another way to wear the jumpsuit in 2010 is with an exotic feel: to work this style look for billowing harem-style pants with gathered-in ankles.

Fashion 2011: Stripes and nautical prints

2010's infatuation with military fashion was heavily influenced by army and air force styling, meaning naval influenced pieces hardy got a look in. As the military trend winds down for spring 2011, we turn to new influences - but that doesn't mean the nautical shall be overlooked entirely. For those fashionisers who are nautically inclined, Spring 2011 still has something in store. Don't think of it strictly as a nautical military trend, however. Rather, in 2011, it's the classic navy and white colour palette, worn as dominant stripes.

The Style

Note that I didn't say bold stripes, but dominant stripes. While navy and white stripes are a must for the look (though black and white can also work in 2011), the real key to Summer's take on nautical stripes is that they dominate the outfit. While they do so in the below look easily (though the plum Doc Martens still seem somewhat heavy), in other outfits it's about drawing attention to the stripes above all else in the outfit.

As an illustration of the point be sure to look at the inspiration pictures below; while most looks rely on bold stripes, you'll see that the trend is just as effective when the stripes are thin. Hence for Summer 2010 look for dominant stripes, not necessarily bold ones.

The Pieces To Wear in 2011

Don't think of this Summer stripes just as a clothing trend: you can work them into any part of an outfit (just not all at once, please). As you'll see in the inspiration gallery stripes can dominate an outfit in everything from hats to killer mini-dresses.

2011's return of bell bottoms - a style which originated with the sailor pants of the US navy - also presents the perfect opportunity for creating nautical ensembles. And of course a striped top with flares is a combination that also lends itself to a perfectly 70s inspired look.

To Nautical Or Not To Nautical?

While Summer's navy and white striped fashion trend isn't a true take on navy inspired fashion, it's likely to appeal to those who are in to the nautical aesthetic. If that's you and you're after some inspiration look to Anja Rubik's sailor inspiration from the June 2010 issue of Vogue Korea. The shoot utilises the season's stripe trend in the form of a dominant blazer, but takes the nautical motifs to far less subtle proportions.

Layering

The natural inclination for layering nautical pieces in an outfit is to do so with complimentary colours (read 'navy and white'). And I can't fault that logic. It's the easy option. But may I offer up one piece of inspiration that differs from the safe? Clashes of stripes with other patterns or prints, for example this shot of Nataliya Piro in Cosmopolitan magazine mixing (admittedly non-dominant) stripes with florals. The stripes don't dominate, but in a crowded room the look certainly will.

Ways to save money this Christmas season

It's still October and already schedules are filling up with things to do to prepare for Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Christmas, Hanukkah and more.

On top of the normal things that need done -- changing your oil, sending out cards, finding time to work out -- you still need to shop for gifts, which is no small matter.

Have a Plan: Fools rush in, and only fools rush into holiday shopping without some kind of plan. Right now is the time to sit down and figure out your plan of attack for holiday shopping.

First off, be realistic in your planning. There's no sense in setting a budget that's too high or too low to live with. Hunt also cautions that, "Many times we forget the expenses of the holidays are more than just gifts. There's entertainment and there's shipping and there's gift wrapping and there's cards, and there's office functions and all of that. Now, before the crush of the holidays comes too heavily, is a good time to sit down and think what am I going to do for the holidays?"

Use the Internet: Hunt calls the Internet "a wonderful tool for shopping online," giving the average consumer the power to narrow, decide and ultimately purchase the best bargain.

One thing to keep in mind when venturing out onto the World Wide Web for research is that there is too much of a good thing. Personally I can research an item for hours, even days, before a purchase to make sure it's the right gadget for me but, as Hunt pointed out, that may not be the best use of my time. Hunt's favorite place to start her online research is Bing, "because it offers reviews, price comparisons and helps find free shipping."

Look for Cashback: Originally something that started with credit cards, cashback is now a popular way to save with online shopping by using Bing Cashback. Shoppers who start their purchase through a Bing search can get cash back from hundreds of popular retailers including eBay. But -- you should be sure to pay attention when using Bing Cashback -- while you can combine cashback with the low deals of participating stores, using a coupon will invalidate your cashback.

So long as you use it wisely, Bing's Cashback is an easy way to save up to 40% on a gift; I saved well over $100 last year on one purchase alone.

Shop Alone: "The most under-rated way to shop," Hunt said, "especially for new mothers, is alone." That's right mom and dad, leave your little one with a sitter for most of the holiday shopping. According to Hunt, "Shopping alone makes you a better shopper, letting you devote all of your mental facilities to the job at hand." That doesn't mean you can't take your tike to the toy store though, just make that a special trip with a purpose of having fun, rather than shopping for gifts.

Keep Receipts: With more retailers tightening up their return policies, like Target, keeping receipts will be more important than ever this year. Hunt recommends keeping a special folder or box for all of your receipts and always asking for a gift receipt. I've taken to scanning all my gift receipts into a special folder on my computer, using NeatReceipts, for easy access in the event of a warranty claim or other issue.

Use One E-mail Account: Another way to keep your receipts in one place is to use a dedicated e-mail address for all of your online shopping. This is also Hunt's way of keeping the e-mail ads that retailers send out oh so frequently from clogging up her daily inbox and is similar to my solution of creating an e-mail filter to deal with restaurant offers.

Credit Card Tips: Just like a single inbox can make online shopping easier, using a single credit card to make holiday purchases can give you an easy way to track holiday spending. This single card method is also handy in the event that your credit card number is compromised, since you only need to cancel one card and don't have to worry about any automated payments that might be linked to it.

Hunt was very adamant that you, "never shop online with a debit card!" While you may like the convenience of money coming straight out of your checking account debit cards don't offer the same protection against theft, offer chargebacks or extend your warranties.

Shop Early: The final tip from Hunt, "Shop early!" Not only are stores stocking less this season, which means less selection and fewer deep discounts in late December; but it also means you can keep your mind clear and enjoy the holidays with your family and friends.

Put these tips into practice as you shop this year and not only will you save some money, but also your sanity.

How to wear Tail hem dresses

Shirttail hem, tapered hem, cutaway hem... whatever you wish to label it, the basic fact remains: skirts and dresses cut longer at the back are continuing to make their way into our trend bibles, and thus features as a major 2011 fashion trend. These hems fill the void between mini and midi; or between midi and maxi. They cover, yet they expose. And they're a simple way to freshen up your spring 2011 wardrobe with a new type of cut.
Read on to find out more about the style, what to look for, and how to wear it.

The tail hem: what is it?

A shirttail hem is traditionally cut shorter on the sides, with a longer 'tail' at the back. In 2011 the trend is more than just a shirttail hem, however: it's any manner of dresses, skirts or tops that have a hem that's shorter in front, longer in back.

Why a tail hem?

The appeal of a dipping hem is that it's playful. One side coveys the elegance of length, while the other hints at something more revealing. It can also have the appeal of looking completely effortless; especially if cut to resemble an untucked shirt, or an oversized tee.

Types of hem

There are numerous ways of creating a unique hemline with a 'tail' effect. Here are a few examples:
  • A simple hem cut at an angle.
  • A more traditional petal hem (where the fabric overlaps in front like petals of a flower)
  • A hem that's cut from very short to very long - i.e mini to maxi.
  • A hem that falls into large drapes or pleats at the back.
Any of these work in 2011 - remember that it's all about adding a little point of difference.
