Neil Patrick Harris Announces Engagement, Celebs Praise NY Gay Marriage Bill

Neil Patrick Harris revealed on Saturday that he's been engaged for years while waiting for the right opportunity to marry his partner David Burtka. Now, he's joining numerous celebrities in praising the approval of a bill in New York State legalizing gay marriage.

"It PASSED! Marriage equality in NY!! Yes!! Progress!! Thank you everyone who worked so hard on this!! A historic night!" Patrick Harris tweeted after New York's legislature gave final approval to the marriage law late Friday.

The actor followed this up later with another tweet: "David and I did propose to each other, but over five years ago! We've been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date."

His partner confirmed the news on his Twitter feed: "Neil and I have been wearing rings for years. We have been engaged for a while. It did not just happen." Patrick Harris and Burtka are the parents of twins.

Ellen DeGeneres also took to her Twitter to react to the historic news: "I'm thrilled about the news from NY. Marriage equality! Every day we get a little closer. What an amazing feeling."

Lady Gaga tweeted that she got emotional over the news: "I can't stop crying. We did it kids."
Later the pop star added: "The revolution is ours to fight for love, justice+equality. Rejoice NY, and propose."

Singer Ricky Martin -- also the father of twins -- reacted by calling for celebration: "Time to celebrate!!! Marriage Equality for NYers! Its about... love!"

"30 Rock" star Alec Baldwin cheered the New York law -- set to take effect in 30 days, tweeting: "Marriage equality.... vote yes." He also thanked 'Sex and the City' star Cynthia Nixon -- who is engaged to partner Christine Marinoni and hopes to marry her in New York state -- for lobbying heavily in support of the measure. "OK...congrats, again, to Cynthia Nixon for all of her hard work on behalf of marriage equality."
